Surabaya, Indonesia, May 22, 2017
—IFC, a member of the World Bank Group, and Syngenta, a leading agricultural company, today launched their joint venture—Syngenta PartnerGrow Academy—in East Java, where the program will be piloted with retailers from Bojonegoro, Lamongan, Gresik, and Tuban.
The Academy provides small-business management training to Syngenta retailers from rural areas to help improve their entrepreneurial business and advisory skills. The curriculum includes topics like financial management, customer care, and business strategy. It supports better farming practices and improved livelihoods for smallholder farmers and syncs with Syngenta’s strategy to actively reach out to its retailer base and farmer customers. Syngenta plans to leverage the success of the East Java pilot and take the PartnerGrow Academy to 500 retailers nationwide.
“We truly believe that smallholder farmers are critical to Indonesia’s agriculture sector,” said Parveen Kathuria, President Director, Syngenta Indonesia. “We launched this Academy, which provides farmers with the best possible solutions, to improve their farms and lives. We also see the Syngenta PartnerGrow Academy as a key element in our strategy of serving our farmer customer base.”
“Capacity building of the various actors in agri-supply chains helps improve the overall function of markets and supports farmers and small businesses to improve their performance,” said Azam Khan, IFC’s Country Manager for Indonesia and Malaysia. “The Academy makes an important contribution to IFC’s mission to fight poverty and boost shared prosperity. It provides advice and services to farmers through the input-distribution network and opens up exciting new opportunities for our work with smallholders. They get information and advice when they need it most—while buying the product and applying it on their farms.”
Ensuring better information and agro-input availability for farmers is a key component of IFC’s strategy in the agribusiness sector. IFC’s training content comes from more than 15 years of global experience in management training for small businesses.
