WASHINGTON, D.C., July 16 -- The International Finance Corporation (IFC) is presenting a five day workshop sponsored by the Commission of the European Community on the development of environmental management systems for financial institutions in Cha-am, Petchburi, Thailand, from July 15 to 19, 1996.
Organized by IFC's Environment Division, the workshop will examine the environmental risks which financial institutions face and present techniques for assessing and managing them. Upon completion of the workshop, participants will be able to understand the political, legal, and financial reasons why financial institutions should establish and implement environmental management systems.
The workshop will be presented by three internationally recognized experts -- IFC's Letitia Oliveira with Eamon Barrett and Chris West of Environmental Resources Management, a U.K.-based firm. Representatives of the leading financial institutions in Thailand are attending.
"This workshop comes at an opportune time when industries are coming under increasing pressure to review and improve their environmental performance and standards," said IFC's Regional Representative in Bangkok, Mr. Darius Lilaoonwala. "It will convey the importance of environmental management to IFC's present and prospective clients, who include some of the major financial institutions in Thailand."
IFC, a member of the World Bank Group, is the largest multilateral source of equity and loan financing for private sector projects in developing countries.
