IFC Partners with Moroccan Pharmaceutical Federation to Increase Productivity, Cut Waste

Rabat, Morocco, February 15, 2022—IFC is joining forces with the Moroccan Federation of Pharmaceuticals Industry and Innovation (FMIIP) to help enhance the sector's efficiency and productivity and mitigate climate change by reducing water and energy waste.

Under the agreement signed today, IFC will assist FMIIP members in reducing their carbon and water footprints and improving efficiencies in their production processes. IFC will share knowledge on best international practices, organize awareness-raising events, and deliver training and capacity building workshops to help boost productivity and ultimately increase the sector's competitiveness.

FMIIP represents local and international medicine manufacturers based in Morocco.

"Our partnership with IFC will help local manufacturers strengthen their production capacities and improve their environmental practices. That will also help increase the production of medicines, especially generic ones, in Morocco and North Africa," said FMIIP's President, Mohamed El Bouhmadi.

Morocco's pharmaceuticals sector is currently scaling up efforts to meet the demand for drugs post-pandemic, and help the country meet its target of offering universal health coverage by 2025.

"IFC is stepping up its partnership with key pharma players in the region to create an enabling environment to boost medicine production in Africa," said Manuel Reyes-Retana, IFC's Acting Regional Director for North Africa. "Our support to pharmaceutical producers in Morocco will help make the sector more productive and energy-efficient and put manufacturers in a better position to attract investment."

The partnership with FMIIP is part of a larger IFC North Africa pharma project being implemented in Egypt, Morocco, and Tunisia to make the pharmaceuticals sector more resource efficient. The project is supported by the government of the Netherlands.
