Luanda, Angola, July 21, 2023—To expand access to quality healthcare in Angola, IFC today announced a partnership with Clínica Sagrada Esperança (CSE), Angola's largest privately managed healthcare provider, to help the company build a 140-bed hospital complex in Luanda complete with modern diagnostic and treatment facilities.
Making its first investment in Angola's health sector, IFC will provide a loan of up to $23.5 million and mobilize an additional $48.5 million to support CSE's plan to build the hospital and equip it with modern surgery theaters, intensive care units, and a kidney dialysis center, among other facilities.
This planned hospital will replace most of the existing CSE health facility in Luanda and provide services such as cardiothoracic surgery and neurosurgery, greatly improving the quality and range of health services available in the country.

We believe it will enhance our standards and help us provide more quality-based services to larger numbers of patients", said Dr. Rui Pinto, President of the Management Council of CSE.

Through the investment, IFC will be supporting a critical player in the healthcare sector in Angola as CSE has the largest network of clinics in the country and is also an important provider of specialist training for healthcare professionals in the country.
CSE will use IFC's Improving Quality (IQ) Healthcare Tool to improve patient safety.
The investment project is aligned with Angola's National Health Development Plan (2012-2025) which aims to improve the quality and availability of healthcare services and to further develop human capital.
About CSE
CSE is one of Angola's largest healthcare providers, with a network
consisting of 29 units, spread across 16 provinces of Angola, 10 referral
doctors, 200 inpatient beds, 71 outpatient rooms and 3 operating rooms at the
main facility in Luanda. It was initially established in the 1990s as a
healthcare facility to support the needs of workers of Angola's state-owned
diamond mining company (Endiama). In 1995, CSE began operating under a business
management model, with services offered to the public. CSE employs 2,200
people, of which more than 300 are doctors, spread across 35 specialties.
