IFC Vice President for Africa, Sérgio Pimenta, to Visit Nigeria to Discuss Private Sector Growth Strategies
Lagos, Nigeria, February 2, 2024 – IFC Vice President for Africa, Sérgio Pimenta, will visit Nigeria from February 5th to 8th to meet with senior government officials, development partners, and private sector stakeholders to discuss private sector-led solutions to strengthen Nigeria's economy and create jobs and opportunities.
In Lagos, Pimenta will deliver opening remarks at a conference organized by the Nigerian Bank of Investment (BOI) and IFC. The conference will convene CEOs and leaders from the financial and real sectors to discuss strengthening Nigeria's investment climate and its industrial base.
Pimenta will also attend the World Bank Senior Leadership retreat in Abuja. Together with the World Bank's Managing Director of Operations, Anna Bjerde, and Vice President for West and Central Africa, Ousmane Diagana, Pimenta will participate in strategic discussions with the private sector on development topics including energy access, digital infrastructure, skills, and finance. He will also meet with World Bank Senior Management and finance ministers from West Africa.
IFC has been increasing its investment and advisory impact in Nigeria, which is among IFC's top 10 portfolios globally and IFC's second-largest portfolio in Africa after South Africa. IFC has invested $2.23 billion in key sectors in Nigeria, including manufacturing, financial services, agribusiness, energy, and digital technology.

Sérgio Pimenta
IFC's Vice President for Africa
Sérgio Pimenta is IFC's Vice President for Africa. In this capacity, he is in charge of all investment, and advisory operations in a region with a committed portfolio of $13.3 billion and more than 800 staff working to expand the private sector's role in addressing urgent development challenges in the financial, manufacturing, agribusiness and services, and infrastructure industries.
Previously, Mr. Pimenta was Director and Global Head of Industry—Manufacturing, Agribusiness, and Services at IFC, managing all operations in these sectors worldwide. Mr. Pimenta also served for three years as IFC's Regional Director responsible for East Asia and the Pacific, based in Hong Kong.
Earlier in his career at IFC, Mr. Pimenta held senior managerial positions in the manufacturing, agribusiness, and services sectors in the Asia Pacific region, the Middle East and North Africa, and Washington, DC.
Prior to joining the World Bank Group through its Young Professionals Program in 1996, Mr. Pimenta worked for the Treasury Department of the French Ministry of Finance, as well as for Banque Nationale de Paris (BNP).
A Portuguese and French national, Mr. Pimenta holds an engineering degree from the École Polytechnique, Paris, and a post-graduate degree from the École Nationale des Ponts et Chaussées, Paris.
